司南盘尺寸：20*20cm。勺柄约为：6.5cm。我国是利用磁石指极性制造指南仪器最早的国家。司南由黄铜地盘与磁勺组成。地盘内圆外方，中心圆面下凹；圆外盘面分层次铸有十天干，十二地支、四卦，标示二十四个方位。当勺体静止时，勺柄即指向南方。锦盒包装。底托为硬杂木，嵌铜丝。勺子为镍钴磁。
